These photos are of my grandfather James Sanford Smith and his family, which includes my father Carl D. Smith. Sanford was born in 1860, and was just age 2 when his father John Wesley Smith left the family farm in southeastern Ohio to fight and die in the Civil War. Later, Sanford's mother, Nancy Legg Hall Smith, married Alexander Smith (no relation) and moved, with Sanford, Cynthia (a year older than Sanford) to the Champion Hill area of Iowa county, Iowa, where other relatives had settled. Alexander and Nancy had 6 more children, 2 of them died young.
