| Midway Islands from the air. You can see part of the reef, across the top and down the right side of the photo. In the upper right, the channel through the reef. The small, square inlet is for seaplanes and small craft. Further in via the channel are two large piers for frieghter and military ship docking. The runways dominate the island, and fill was used to extend them beyond the original size of the island. The hangar is the large structure in the center. Just beyond it is a large grassy area with a large number of antennas. The treed area to the left of the hangar is family housing, church, hospital, school, and above that is the "downtown" area. In the upper right corner is Eastern island, considerably smaller, but with personnel living and working on it. The 4 small squares center right are the water treatment tanks. The Transient hotel, where I lived for some time, is just across the street. |
